bet365 Accused of Forcibly Changing Odds, Fueling Unfair-Terms Debate
British online gambling platform bet365 operates under a centralized model, with betting rules that typically allow the operator to resettle wagers when it determines that odds were posted incorrectly. The dispute highlights how the platform controls the odds, rulings and payouts. Even when players place a wager at the displayed odds and correctly predict the outcome, unilateral terms may prevent them from receiving the originally stated return.
An Argentine social media user bet on a World Cup match and correctly predicted that Paraguay would eliminate Germany, with the original wager placed at odds of 15-to-1. bet365 later cited an “odds error” and forcibly adjusted the odds, cutting the user’s return by 75%. Reports did not disclose the amount wagered, the year of the tournament or the settlement date. After the case came to light, it sparked social media debate over unfair contract terms and gambling risks.
