Tech Giants Add AI Skills to Performance Reviews and Hiring Standards
Generative AI is shifting from a desirable skill to a core job requirement as technology giants seek to turn massive investments into productivity gains. Amazon, Alphabet and Meta planned about $100 billion, $75 billion and $60 billion–$65 billion in capital spending, respectively, in 2025, with most of it directed toward AI infrastructure. Employees’ ability to use AI to improve development, analysis and operations has therefore become directly tied to investment returns and workforce allocation.
Beginning in 2025, Amazon, Google and Meta increasingly required employees to demonstrate results from using AI in their daily work. Some teams incorporated proficiency, adoption rates or impact on output into performance reviews. Meta also made AI skills mandatory for some positions, while JPMorgan Chase added them to employee evaluations. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said on June 17, 2025, that generative AI would reduce some corporate jobs, showing that performance reviews, hiring and workforce adjustments have become part of a single transformation strategy.
