TRM Finds AI Agents Drive Less Than 8% of x402 Commerce

2 reports · First detected 2026-09-13 · Last active 2026-09-14

Coinbase’s x402 protocol turns the long-dormant HTTP “402 Payment Required” status into an onchain checkout, allowing software to buy APIs, data and other services on a pay-per-use basis without a conventional payment page. The rail has become a prominent test of agentic commerce because its transactions are publicly visible. But x402 does not identify whether a payer is an autonomous AI agent, a scheduled job or a conventional script, making headline transaction totals a poor proxy for genuine agent demand.

TRM Labs said in research published on Sept. 9, 2026, that known x402 facilitators handled about $52.7 million across 198.9 million settlements on Base, Solana and Polygon since May 2025. After excluding self-payments, concentrated bulk flows and merchants with fewer than 10 buyers, it identified $25.62 million in screened commerce. Its permissive and strict tests estimated that only 0.6% to 7.5% of that value was likely agentic, while USDC accounted for $52.47 million of $52.68 million, or 99.6%, of total settlement value.

Coinbase Engineer Says AI Agents Could End Online Advertising and Drive Crypto Micropaymentsfirst seen 2026-05-07 · 1 reports · similarity 0.80

Much of today’s online content is monetized through people visiting pages, viewing advertisements and clicking referral links. Autonomous AI agents, however, access content, APIs and digital services directly and do not view ads. Erik Reppel, head of engineering at Coinbase Developer Platform and founder of x402, believes this will disrupt the ad-supported internet economy and underscore the importance of a machine-native payment layer.

Reppel told Consensus Miami 2026 on May 6, 2026, that the agentic economy could reach $3 trillion to $5 trillion by 2030. He said stablecoin micropayments and the Coinbase-backed x402 protocol could allow AI agents to pay automatically for content, APIs and digital services within HTTP requests, gradually replacing indirect monetization models such as advertising and subscriptions.

Coinbase's x402 AI Payments Protocol Joins Linux Foundation with Big Tech Backingfirst seen 2026-04-02 · 3 reports · similarity 0.81

Developed by Coinbase, x402 uses the HTTP “402 Payment Required” status code to let AI agents, APIs and applications initiate card or stablecoin payments directly. It addresses the high costs and cumbersome processes traditional financial systems face when handling high-frequency micropayments, while reducing the risk of vendor lock-in through an open standard.

Coinbase and Cloudflare proposed establishing a foundation on September 23, 2025. The Linux Foundation announced that it would take over stewardship of the protocol on April 2, 2026, with support from 23 companies at the time. The x402 Foundation formally began operations on July 14, with membership rising to 40 companies, including Google, AWS, Stripe, Visa and Mastercard. Officials did not disclose funding or transaction volumes.
