ANZ Cuts Customer Scam Losses 24% as Fraud Activity Rises
Scams remain a major financial threat to Australians as criminals refine online shopping, impersonation, investment and romance schemes. ANZ said it has continued investing in prevention, detection, disruption and customer education, supported by its First Responders team and Confirmation of Payee warnings. The measures are designed to stop suspicious transfers before funds leave customers’ accounts and to improve the bank’s response when potential victims seek help.
ANZ said on Aug. 24, during Scams Awareness Week, that customer scam losses fell about 24% year-on-year between October 2025 and June 2026 despite increased fraudulent activity. The bank prevented or recovered more than A$100 million in scam- and fraud-related funds. Its First Responders handled nearly 170,000 calls and resolved 94% at first contact, while customers abandoned more than 476,000 payments after receiving Confirmation of Payee mismatch warnings.
