Taiwan Memory Chipmakers Go on Defensive as AI Booms and Korean Rivals Expand
Demand for AI servers is driving greater use of high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and other advanced memory products. Capacity expansions by Samsung Electronics and SK hynix are intensifying global competition over supply and pricing. In response, Nanya Technology, Winbond Electronics, Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp. and Macronix are accelerating process upgrades and shifting toward advanced products and niche applications to limit their exposure to a head-on price war.
The latest reports say Taiwan's memory chipmakers have raised their guard and adopted a defensive strategy. In addition to protecting existing customers and niche markets, they are pushing into HBM production and the AI supply chain. The reports have disclosed only the companies' strategic direction, however, without providing expansion spending, projected capacity increases or firm production dates.
