Polymarket Sees Ethereum at Risk of Losing No. 2 Crypto Ranking in 2026
Ethereum (ETH) has long ranked behind only Bitcoin as the world’s second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization. But the rapid expansion of stablecoins such as Tether-issued USDT, which aims to maintain a value of $1 per token, is reshaping the rankings. The shift reflects a growing preference for assets used in payments, trading and hedging, potentially eroding ETH’s relative market share and industry influence.
Polymarket traders recently put the probability of Ethereum losing second place by the end of 2026 at 59%, up 42 percentage points from 17% at the start of 2026. The main threat priced in by the market is not Bitcoin but the continued growth in the market capitalization of stablecoins such as USDT, which could overtake ETH during the year and produce a ranking change distinct from the traditional “flippening” narrative.
