Taiwan FSC Eases Online Insurance Rules, Sharply Raises Travel Medical Coverage Cap

Taiwan’s Financial Supervisory Commission amended its rules governing insurers’ e-commerce operations, replacing the case-by-case approval of online insurance services with a “negative list” system. Services not explicitly prohibited may generally be offered online. The change will expand insurers’ digital offerings and address demand for greater medical coverage when traveling abroad.

The new rules are expected to formally take effect in May. For adults buying travel accident insurance online, the coverage limit for supplementary medical insurance will rise to 30% of the primary policy’s insured amount. Minors will no longer be subject to a cap tied to the primary policy and may obtain coverage of up to NT$1.2 million. The FSC is also advancing four deregulatory measures to help the insurance industry accelerate its digital transformation.
