BMO, RBC Sell Moneris to Francisco Partners for C$2 Billion
Bank of Montreal and Royal Bank of Canada formed Moneris Solutions in 2000, building it into one of Canada’s largest commerce-solutions providers. The company helps merchants accept and manage payments across more than 325,000 points of commerce. The sale illustrates how banks can monetize mature payments infrastructure without surrendering distribution: BMO and RBC will give up ownership while retaining exclusive referral channels linking their business customers to Moneris.
BMO and RBC said on Aug. 10, 2026, that Francisco Partners agreed to acquire Moneris for about C$2 billion in cash, with each bank receiving a 50% share, or roughly C$1 billion. The transaction is expected to close by the end of the banks’ fiscal first quarter of 2027, subject to customary conditions and Canadian approvals under the Retail Payment Activities Act and Competition Act. New exclusive, long-term customer referral agreements will take effect at closing.
