Google Sets 2029 PQC Deadline, Accelerating Quantum-Resistant Blockchain Upgrades
Quantum computers capable of breaking current public-key cryptography could jeopardize account signatures and the security of historical transactions. The risk of “harvest now, decrypt later” attacks also makes early migration imperative. Google recently announced that its products must complete their migration to post-quantum cryptography, or PQC, by 2029, six years ahead of the U.S. federal government’s 2035 target. The timetable is increasing pressure to upgrade blockchains. The Ethereum, Solana and Bitcoin communities must accelerate their assessment of quantum-resistant signatures, wallet compatibility and protocol migration options, though Bitcoin has yet to reach a clear consensus.
