Draft PCIe 8.0 Spec Targets More Than 1 TB/s for AI Applications
PCI Express is a high-speed interface connecting processors, GPUs, accelerators and storage devices, with standards developed by PCI-SIG. As AI, machine learning and high-performance computing drive demand for data exchange, PCIe 8.0 is set to become critical infrastructure for easing system bottlenecks and improving computing-cluster performance.
PCI-SIG recently published a draft PCIe 8.0 specification, with the final standard scheduled for formal release in 2028. Unidirectional bandwidth in an x16 configuration will exceed 1 TB per second. The new specification targets data-intensive applications and introduces a new encoding technology designed to improve power consumption and latency at high transfer speeds, laying the groundwork for next-generation AI and computing platforms.
