Aave Founder Proposes DeFi and RWAs to Ease Private Credit Funds’ Liquidity Strain

1 reports · First detected 2026-03-09 · Last active 2026-03-09

After the 2008 financial crisis, Basel III raised bank capital requirements, prompting banks to retreat from some higher-risk corporate lending. Private credit firms including Apollo and Blackstone stepped in to fill the gap. The global market is now worth about $2 trillion and provides financing for 80%–90% of leveraged buyouts in the U.S. middle market. High interest rates and AI’s impact on SaaS companies’ debt-servicing capacity have made liquidity risks particularly critical.

In the first quarter of 2026, Blackstone’s flagship BCRED fund received about $3.8 billion in redemption requests, equal to 7.9% of net assets. The company said it met them in full. BlackRock’s HLEND, meanwhile, restricted some withdrawals. In March, Aave founder Stani Kulechov argued that combining DeFi with RWAs could encode redemption, collateral and yield rules in smart contracts, but warned that tokenizing distressed assets could leave onchain investors holding the bag.

Aave Founder Says DeFi Will Target $200 Trillion Infrastructure Financing Market2026-03-02 · 1 reports · similarity 0.82

Decentralized finance, or DeFi, has primarily served crypto trading, lending and yield strategies, with Aave emerging as a major onchain lending protocol. Founder Stani Kulechov believes the industry’s next phase will extend its capital-allocation capabilities to physical infrastructure such as solar power, robotics and space, broadening the scope of blockchain-based finance.

Kulechov’s latest estimate puts global financing demand for such infrastructure at $200 trillion, about 15 times the combined assets of the world’s 10 largest banks. He argues that DeFi will shift from onchain speculation toward long-term financing for physical assets. As of July 20, 2026, the available information did not disclose when he made the remarks, a specific financing timetable or the value of any projects already financed by Aave.
