OpenAI Pledges Better Developer Experience for Third-Party ChatGPT Apps

OpenAI launched Apps in ChatGPT and the Apps SDK on October 6, 2025, allowing an initial group of seven partners, including Booking.com and Spotify, to embed their services in conversations. On December 17, it opened app submissions to developers and launched the App Directory. The strategy aims to turn ChatGPT from a chat tool into a gateway for transactions and services, challenging the Apple App Store’s role in app distribution.

As of March 30, 2026, more than 300 apps had been integrated. Partners said traffic was low, reviews were slow and analytics were limited, while most transactions still required users to visit external websites. A Criteo survey of more than 6,000 people found that 55% were more cautious about giving payment information to AI. OpenAI pledged to improve reliability, predictability and ease of development. It approved nearly 70 apps in the preceding week, up from three to five per day previously.

OpenAI had already offered ChatGPT desktop software for macOS and Windows, and in July 2026 combined Chat, Work and Codex in a single application. Linux commands only a small share of consumer desktops, but it is central to software development and AI infrastructure, making official support strategically important. The launch also narrows a platform gap with Anthropic, which released a beta version of Claude Desktop for Ubuntu and Debian on June 30.

OpenAI began previewing the ChatGPT desktop app for Linux on Aug. 11, 2026, distributing native .deb and .rpm packages for Ubuntu 24.04 and 26.04, Debian 13, and Fedora 43 and 44. The software brings ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and the Codex coding agent to Linux users under one interface. OpenAI has not set a date for general availability and did not announce a separate price or investment figure for the preview.
