OpenAI Connects Epic Health Records to ChatGPT

Epic’s electronic health record system contains data covering more than 325 million patients, making it a critical gateway to clinical information. OpenAI’s integration brings authorized Epic records into ChatGPT for Healthcare, allowing clinicians to review histories, laboratory results, medications and specialist notes alongside medical evidence. The product is designed to reduce time spent assembling fragmented information under enterprise access controls, not to replace physicians’ diagnostic or treatment decisions.

OpenAI announced the integration on Sept. 1, 2026, offering read-only access that does not write information back to patient charts. Supported deployments can also embed ChatGPT directly in the EHR interface. A new Healthcare Public Data plugin connects nine official sources, including PubMed, DailyMed, RxNorm, ClinicalTrials.gov and CMS Coverage. In testing across 27 clinical use cases, physicians completed 4,363 ratings and judged 99.1% of responses safe; separate evaluations found more than 93% were rated “good” or better for accuracy across each of five tested data sources.
