Robinhood Founder Exposes Seed Phrase on Livestream, Hacker Pumps Meme Coins

1 reports · First detected 2026-07-13 · Last active 2026-07-13

US online brokerage Robinhood has aggressively expanded its cryptocurrency business in recent years, making founder Vlad Tenev an influential figure in financial technology. A crypto wallet's seed phrase is effectively the sole key to controlling its funds, making its protection critical. The incident exposed shortcomings in personal security practices and highlighted the potential risks of self-custody blockchain wallets.

Tenev accidentally exposed a wallet seed phrase during a livestream in July 2026, allowing a hacker to seize control. The attacker used the trusted address to aggressively pump meme coins, then moved across chains to issue a new token on BNB Chain and cash out. The activity generated nearly $20 million in trading volume within just two hours and triggered significant market volatility. The funds in the wallet have since been transferred.

Hackers Hijack Robinhood CEO’s X Account to Promote Fake VLAD Token2026-07-24 · 8 reports · similarity 0.86

Robinhood Chain, an Ethereum layer-2 network built on the Arbitrum Orbit stack, went live on July 1 with a pitch centered on tokenized stocks and other real-world assets. Instead, its early decentralized-exchange activity has been dominated by speculative memecoins, highlighting the gap between the brokerage’s institutional ambitions and the behavior of users on an open blockchain. The misuse of a senior executive’s verified social-media account also shows how apparent corporate endorsements can rapidly amplify fraud.

On July 23, hackers used CEO Vlad Tenev’s X account to tout Vladhood, or VLAD, as Robinhood Chain’s “official mascot” and falsely claim it would be listed in the Robinhood app. The post drew more than 175,000 views in about 20 minutes before removal, while the chain’s explorer flagged the token as a potential scam. Robinhood confirmed the breach. On-chain monitors estimated proceeds at roughly 650 Ether, worth $1.2 million to $1.3 million; Entropy Advisors put the chain’s cumulative DEX volume near $9 billion.
