Mastercard Reportedly Weighs Vocalink Sale as UK Payment Protectionism Rises
Mastercard acquired UK payment technology company Vocalink for about £700 million in 2017. The company processes more than 90% of UK payroll payments and 70% of household bills, making it a core part of the country’s financial infrastructure. Amid rising geopolitical risks and protectionism, UK regulators have become highly sensitive to foreign control of domestic payment rails. The case underscores the challenges multinational payment companies face as governments seek to preserve payment sovereignty.
Mastercard is reportedly considering selling a majority stake of about 51% in Vocalink at a valuation of roughly £400 million. DeliveryCo, a new entity backed by major UK banks, is expected to be the leading buyer. The potential sale follows a £11.9 million Bank of England fine imposed on the subsidiary in 2025 for risk-management failures, which intensified regulatory pressure. However, the transaction may not be completed until 2027 at the earliest because the buyer’s governance structure is still being established.
