Meta Readies Camera-Free Luna Smart Glasses for AI Voice Push

Meta unveiled 26 AI smart-glasses models in late June 2026, priced from $299 and equipped with cameras, microphones, Meta AI and livestreaming capabilities. While hands-free recording offers convenience, a Harvard University experiment showed that publicly available AI tools could be used to identify strangers and locate their home addresses, fueling concern over covert filming, facial recognition and doxxing.

On July 8, 2026, Meta announced a tamper-resistant update that forcibly disables the camera when the system detects that the recording LED has been modified or physically damaged. A covertly filmed video had already circulated more than 1.3 million times. Reports emerged on July 9 that the company was also testing a “super-sensing” feature that could record its surroundings for extended periods without illuminating the indicator light, prompting civil-rights groups to question whether voluntary safeguards can prevent malicious surveillance.

Meta is continuing to extend generative AI beyond its social platforms and into wearables, advancing from its early partnership with Ray-Ban to products under its own brand. The $299 entry price targets the mass market, while a collaboration with Kylie Jenner reinforces the glasses' fashion positioning. Their recording capabilities, image collection and use of personal data have also raised privacy concerns.
