Google Adds Video Selfies for Account Recovery

Google Accounts can hold emails, photos, documents and other sensitive data, making recovery critical when users forget a password or lose access to a trusted device. The new selfie-video option provides an additional backup alongside passkeys, recovery contacts and backup codes. It is designed primarily for lockout scenarios, reducing dependence on a specific phone or computer rather than replacing Google's routine sign-in methods.

Google announced the feature on July 23, 2026, and is rolling it out globally to most eligible personal accounts. Users record guided head movements in advance; if locked out later, they submit another video that Google compares with the encrypted stored version. Liveness checks and other security controls aim to detect photos, fake videos and deepfakes. Recordings can be deleted at any time, but enrollment must occur before account recovery begins. Google Workspace, child and Advanced Protection Program accounts are not eligible.
