Google Adds Selfie Video Sign-In for Account Recovery

Google Accounts can hold email, photos and documents, making recovery critical when users lose a device, forget a password or cannot reach their usual two-factor authentication tools. Google is adding biometric matching as another backup alongside passkeys and recovery contacts. The approach broadens access options but also raises the security challenge of blocking impersonation through photographs, prerecorded clips and AI-generated deepfakes.

Google announced the Selfie video feature on July 23, 2026. Users must enroll while they still have account access by recording a short reference video and completing guided head movements that capture multiple facial angles. If locked out later, they record a new clip for comparison and liveness checks. Google said the stored video is encrypted at rest, can be deleted at any time and is used only for sign-in unless the user opts into additional purposes.
