Vitalik Buterin Proposes Simpler Ethereum Node Software to Boost Decentralization

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has positioned “Lean Ethereum” as the network's third major overhaul after the Merge in September 2022. The plan aims to simplify the protocol and replace multiple core components. Its success will help determine whether Ethereum can remain secure and competitive amid threats from quantum computing, transaction congestion and demand for on-chain privacy.

Buterin released a draft technical roadmap for Lean Ethereum in late July 2025, with implementation expected to unfold gradually over the next three to four years. It identifies quantum resistance, scalability and privacy as its three top priorities. Ethereum developers broadly support the long-term direction but have urged the Ethereum Foundation to accelerate execution and the pace of upgrades.

About 37 million–38 million ETH was staked in early 2026, representing 30%–32% of the circulating supply, while the number of active validators approached 1 million. Complex key and system management, however, continues to leave institutions reliant on large service providers, raising centralization concerns.

The Ethereum Foundation said on May 11, 2026, that Glamsterdam's multi-client development network was running ePBS reliably and that pricing under EIP-8037 had been finalized. It set a post-upgrade minimum gas-limit target of 200 million, more than triple the roughly 60 million at the time. On Ethereum, specialized builders order transactions and assemble blocks before handing them to validators to propose on-chain. Although the Glamsterdam upgrade will formally introduce proposer-builder separation, a market dominated by a small number of operators could still enable transaction censorship or MEV extraction, threatening network neutrality and fair transaction processing.

RISC-V would be introduced in three phases and ultimately replace the EVM. Speaking with Wanxiang Blockchain Chairman Xiao Feng at the Hong Kong Web3 Festival on April 22, Buterin reiterated that simplification was the priority. Although an AI experiment produced a prototype of the 2030 roadmap within weeks, half of the resulting speed gains should still be devoted to testing and formal verification.
