Ethereum’s account-based design keeps balances, smart-contract code and storage in a shared state that grows as applications expand, increasing the burden on nodes and block builders. Bitcoin’s unspent transaction output, or UTXO, model treats assets as discrete objects that can be consumed once, making many payment and token workloads easier to parallelize and store efficiently. A hybrid architecture could preserve Ethereum’s flexible dynamic state for complex contracts while shifting routine assets to cheaper storage, supporting higher throughput without raising hardware demands that threaten decentralization and censorship resistance.

On July 4, 2026, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin outlined the “Lean Ethereum” direction, proposing recursive STARK verification in place of widespread transaction re-execution and new scalable state types, including UTXOs. He sketched a 2030 network with about 2 terabytes of conventional dynamic state alongside 100 terabytes of more restrictive new state. Redesigning ERC-20 tokens around the emerging UTXO storage could cut transaction fees by more than 10 times, he said. The overhaul is expected to unfold over three to four years and remains subject to research, developer feedback and protocol approval.
