One-Third of ChatGPT Ads Miss Conversation Context, Study Finds
Generative AI platforms are exploring advertising as a way to offset the substantial computing costs of conversational services and build recurring revenue. Unlike search advertising, which often relies on explicit keywords, chatbot promotions must interpret longer, shifting exchanges and distinguish casual questions from commercial intent. Poorly targeted placements risk disrupting the user experience and weakening trust in both the platform and advertisers.
AI visibility platform Searchable analyzed more than 11,000 ChatGPT ads and found that 33% were unrelated to the conversation in which they appeared. Only 27% achieved a direct, precise match with the discussion, according to the study. It also found that 68% of ads surfaced during conversations where users showed no purchasing intent, underscoring the accuracy challenge facing advertising within generative AI products.
