OpenAI Reportedly Plans AI Companion Speaker to Challenge Apple
OpenAI plans to launch its first screenless AI companion smart speaker, formally entering the physical hardware market with a product positioned as a home computer for the AI era. The move is aimed directly at Apple’s J490 smart home hub under development, setting up a head-to-head contest between a generative AI heavyweight and a consumer electronics leader in the smart-home market. It also signals that AI technology is moving more rapidly from cloud software into physical devices.
However, the product, originally slated for release in 2027, now faces a potential delay. Apple formally filed a trade-secret theft lawsuit in court in early July 2026. Although earlier reports said OpenAI would unveil the smart speaker this year, the legal dispute has added uncertainty to the hardware rivalry between the two technology giants.

OpenAI and former Apple designer Jony Ive are extending generative AI beyond software services into consumer hardware, with their first product set to be a smart speaker. Combining cameras, facial recognition and environmental awareness, the device is intended to serve as an everyday AI interface capable of understanding users and their surroundings. It could also reshape how people interact with machines and shop.
A team of more than 200 people is developing the smart speaker, which is expected to ship in early 2027 and cost $200–$300. The product will be able to observe its surroundings, proactively guide user behavior, and use technology similar to Apple’s Face ID to verify identities and complete purchases. It will be the first AI hardware product from the OpenAI-Jony Ive partnership.
