Starbucks Launches AI-Powered Drink Recommendations in ChatGPT
OpenAI opened ChatGPT to third-party app integrations in October 2025, allowing brands to bring product discovery into a conversational interface. Starbucks’ test replaces browsing a traditional menu with drink recommendations based on a user’s mood and circumstances, while keeping checkout in its own app and website. The approach could help Starbucks retain control of loyalty programs, transaction data and customer relationships, making it a significant example of generative AI entering the food and beverage purchasing journey.
Starbucks launched a beta app in OpenAI’s ChatGPT on April 15, 2026. After entering “@Starbucks,” users can describe their mood in text or upload a photo to receive personalized drink suggestions. Recommendations are generated within ChatGPT, but ordering and payment still redirect users to the Starbucks app or website. The company has not disclosed pricing, market availability, user numbers or conversion rates.
