MIT Study Warns Only 5% of Corporate AI Projects Deliver Returns
Companies have rushed to deploy generative artificial intelligence as a shortcut to higher productivity and digital transformation. Yet adoption alone does not guarantee value: results depend on redesigned workflows, reliable data and sustained employee use. Recent survey findings show as many as 90% of executives have yet to see clear productivity gains, underscoring the gap between using AI tools and producing measurable business outcomes.
A recent MIT report found that only about 5% of corporate generative-AI projects delivered a tangible return on investment, while the vast majority failed to improve profit-and-loss results. Experts warned that companies pursuing an AI label without defined use cases or performance benchmarks could face mounting technology, consulting and integration costs. Such spending may divert resources, blur strategic priorities and turn an innovation program into a broader operational risk.
