Riot Platforms is a major U.S. Bitcoin miner whose operating performance is shaped by Bitcoin prices, mining difficulty and electricity costs. Since the Bitcoin halving, miners have relied more heavily on expanding hash rate, securing power credits and selling reserves to maintain cash flow. Riot is also developing its data center business to reduce volatility from its reliance on mining revenue.

Riot generated $167 million in revenue in the first quarter of 2026, including $33 million from its data center business. It produced 1,473 Bitcoin and sold 3,778 for $289 million. Bitcoin holdings at the end of the quarter fell 18% year on year to 15,680, while total hash rate rose 26% to 42.5 EH/s. Power credits also helped lower operating costs.

The Backstory

The history behind this event
Riot Extends $200 Million Coinbase Credit Facility, Continues to Pare Bitcoin Holdings2026-04-28 · 1 reports · similarity 0.84

Riot Platforms was primarily a Bitcoin mining company, but amid cryptocurrency price volatility, pressure on mining revenue and energy costs, it is redirecting its existing power assets toward AI and high-performance computing infrastructure. Its $200 million credit facility with Coinbase Credit is an important financing tool for funding the transition and providing working capital.

Riot Platforms recently amended the $200 million credit agreement, replacing its floating interest rate with a fixed rate and extending the maturity by one year to reduce uncertainty over financing costs. The company's Bitcoin holdings have fallen by about 4,000 tokens, from roughly 19,000 at the start of the year to around 15,000. It could sell more if Bitcoin prices remain weak.

Riot Wallet Outflow Adds to Wave of Large BTC Sales by Listed Bitcoin Miners2026-04-02 · 1 reports · similarity 0.82

Bitcoin miners typically hold the BTC they produce as an asset, but those reserves can also fund operations and debt repayments when cryptocurrency volatility, electricity costs and public-market pressures rise. Reductions in holdings by Riot Platforms, MARA Holdings and Empery Digital point to a shift from accumulating Bitcoin toward bolstering liquidity, potentially adding to market selling pressure.

Arkham tracked an outflow of 500 BTC from a Riot Platforms wallet on April 1, worth about $34 million at the time. As of publication on April 2, the company had not confirmed a sale. MARA Holdings sold 15,133 BTC in March for about $1.1 billion to fund the discounted repurchase of $1 billion in convertible debt. Empery Digital subsequently transferred its remaining 1,795 BTC, worth about $122.5 million, to Gemini.

Profit margins across the mining industry have come under pressure since the 2024 halving, making Riot's ability to expand revenue in 2025 an important gauge of industry conditions and the efficiency gains available at scale.

Riot Platforms reported record full-year revenue of $647 million in 2025, up 72% from 2024. Bitcoin mining revenue totaled $576 million and was the main driver of growth. However, accounting adjustments and changes in the carrying value of its Bitcoin holdings contributed to a net loss of $663 million for 2025.
