Logistics Giants Deploy Robots to Automate Toughest Handoffs
Warehouse automation has historically worked best with standardized bins, fixed conveyor routes and predictable inputs. The harder challenge lies at network edges, where parcels move from trailers to sorting systems, delivery stations and vehicles despite varying widely in size, shape and destination. A June 2026 survey of 60 senior technology executives at companies with at least $1 billion in annual revenue found that 53% to 67% of large businesses remained in the early exploration stage for supply-chain AI.
A Sept. 1, 2026 report said Amazon’s early-stage Project Tetromino aims to process packages at delivery stations about 2.5 times faster than its current design. FedEx said on July 30, 2026, that it was expanding deployment of Dexterity’s dual-armed Mech robots at its Hagerstown, Maryland hub. DHL’s Boston Dynamics Stretch robots can unload as many as 700 boxes an hour, while a 2025 agreement calls for more than 1,000 additional units worldwide. DHL has invested more than $1.1 billion in contract-logistics automation over three years.
