AI Agents Usher In New Era for UK Retail Banking
UK retail banking has entered a digital-first phase, with about 48 million adults, or 88% of the adult population, using online or remote banking. Digital banks such as Monzo, Starling and Revolut have intensified competition, making first-contact resolution crucial to customer retention. Yet 40% of users still report poor experiences with existing chatbots.
The Fintech Times published an opinion piece by Druid AI Chief Operating Officer Andreea Plesea on April 10, 2026, arguing that AI agents can search records across systems, guide customers through loan applications and update accounts. More than 265,000 people switched banks in the third quarter of 2025, with 44% citing online banking and 35% customer service. The report did not disclose implementation costs and projected that cash would account for just 4% of transactions by 2034.
