Intel Details Three Chip Architectures for Agentic AI
Agentic AI systems need more than accelerators: CPUs must orchestrate workflows, GPUs must serve models efficiently, and client chips must bring inference closer to users. Intel is positioning a heterogeneous stack spanning data centers, enterprise systems and edge devices, backed by its Intel 18A process family, Foveros Direct 3D packaging and the UCIe open chiplet-interconnect standard. The strategy is intended to balance performance, power, deployment cost and scalability as autonomous AI agents proliferate.
Intel detailed three architectures at Hot Chips 2026 on Aug. 24. Diamond Rapids, its next-generation Xeon processor, scales to 256 cores, 1.28 GB of last-level cache and 16 memory channels. Crescent Island pairs 32 Xe cores and 256 XMX engines with as much as 480 GB of LPDDR5X memory in a 350-watt, air-cooled PCIe card. Wildcat Lake, launched as Intel Core Series 3, combines two performance cores, four efficiency cores and an NPU delivering up to 17 TOPS for laptops and edge systems.
