Stripe Leans Toward Staying Private as AI Reshapes Commerce

1 reports · First detected 2026-08-25 · Last active 2026-08-25

Stripe, founded by brothers Patrick and John Collison, has grown into one of the world’s largest private financial-technology companies. Businesses running on its platform generated $1.9 trillion in total payment volume in 2025, while a February 2026 employee tender valued the company at $159 billion. Its listing plans matter to investors seeking liquidity, but remaining private gives Stripe more latitude to pursue long-term investments and large acquisitions as artificial intelligence reshapes online commerce.

In an Aug. 19, 2026 investor letter, Stripe’s founders defended remaining private, saying the structure helps the company steer a long-term course while limiting shareholder dilution. The letter accompanied its agreement to acquire AI model marketplace OpenRouter for more than $8 billion, mostly in stock, with closing expected within weeks. Stripe said 88% of the Forbes AI 50, including OpenAI and Anthropic, build on its platform, while the share of revenue from AI and crypto customers has more than doubled from a year earlier.

The Backstory

The history behind this event
Stripe Expands Payments Empire With AI Billing and Stablecoins2026-07-23 · 1 reports · similarity 0.85

Generative AI is accelerating a shift from conventional software subscriptions toward usage-based pricing tied to tokens, API calls and computing consumption. Stripe sits at the center of that transition by processing subscription and metered payments for fast-growing developers and AI labs including OpenAI and Anthropic. The exposure gives Stripe a direct share of their expanding sales while supporting its push beyond transaction processing into billing, invoicing, tax services and broader financial infrastructure.

Stripe’s revenue rose by about one-third to $6.8 billion in 2025, according to a July 22, 2026 report. It completed its acquisition of usage-billing specialist Metronome in January and has added AI Gateway, which lets developers access multiple models and monitor consumption. Stripe also bought stablecoin infrastructure company Bridge for $1.1 billion and joined the Open USD consortium. Separately, Stripe and Advent International reportedly submitted an offer on July 15 valuing PayPal at more than $53 billion.
