Stripe Expands Payments Empire With AI Billing and Stablecoins
Generative AI is accelerating a shift from conventional software subscriptions toward usage-based pricing tied to tokens, API calls and computing consumption. Stripe sits at the center of that transition by processing subscription and metered payments for fast-growing developers and AI labs including OpenAI and Anthropic. The exposure gives Stripe a direct share of their expanding sales while supporting its push beyond transaction processing into billing, invoicing, tax services and broader financial infrastructure.
Stripe’s revenue rose by about one-third to $6.8 billion in 2025, according to a July 22, 2026 report. It completed its acquisition of usage-billing specialist Metronome in January and has added AI Gateway, which lets developers access multiple models and monitor consumption. Stripe also bought stablecoin infrastructure company Bridge for $1.1 billion and joined the Open USD consortium. Separately, Stripe and Advent International reportedly submitted an offer on July 15 valuing PayPal at more than $53 billion.

The history behind this eventStripe and Swift Vie to Control Next-Generation Global Payments Infrastructure
Swift, the traditional settlement leader connecting more than 11,000 financial institutions worldwide, is facing a formidable challenge from digital payments giant Stripe. The competition has moved beyond testing blockchain technology and become a contest for control of the next generation of global tokenized payment rails. As demand for speed and compliance in cross-border transactions rises sharply, control of the underlying clearing and merchant-channel infrastructure will determine the rules governing future global money flows.
In July 2026, Stripe joined forces with private equity firm Ardian to make an unsolicited $53 billion takeover offer for PayPal, which has more than 439 million accounts, seeking to integrate their merchant and wallet ecosystems. Meanwhile, after completing a pilot with 17 global banks, Swift is working with more than 40 financial institutions to further expand its blockchain settlement network.
Stripe Unveils 288 Updates at 2026 Conference, Partners With Google on AI Agent Commerce and Streaming Stablecoin Payments
Stripe, a global payments infrastructure provider, is expanding beyond traditional online checkout into commerce conducted by AI agents. As AI services adopt token-based pricing and agents increasingly make automated purchases and frequent micropayments, the authorization processes and fixed fees of existing credit-card networks are gradually becoming barriers to scaling such transactions.
At its 2026 Sessions annual conference, Stripe unveiled 288 updates. They included a partnership with Google that allows merchants to list products in AI shopping interfaces, as well as support for AI agents to make authorized payments through the Link wallet. Stripe also introduced streaming stablecoin payments using the Tempo blockchain, targeting real-time micropayments for services billed continuously by the token.
Stripe Introduces Tools to Meter and Bill for AI Usage
The inference costs of generative AI services fluctuate with token volumes and the number of API calls, making it difficult for fixed monthly fees or tiered subscriptions to reflect costs accurately. Payments company Stripe has therefore added usage-based pricing to Stripe Billing, helping software companies align customer spending and product revenue more closely with underlying AI computing costs.
Stripe has introduced tools to meter and bill for AI usage, allowing businesses to charge customers in real time based on token volumes or the number of API calls and settle accounts through Stripe Billing. Reports did not disclose an official launch date, pricing or fee amounts, or identify the first customers to adopt the tools.
