World Gold Council, BCG Propose ‘Gold-as-a-Service’ Platform to Standardize Tokenization

2 reports · First detected 2026-03-20 · Last active 2026-03-20

Gold tokens represent physical bullion as transferable digital units, but issuers have long handled custody, compliance and redemption separately. Fragmented standards have constrained interoperability and liquidity. The World Gold Council and Boston Consulting Group (BCG) are therefore targeting the roughly $4.9 billion tokenized gold market with underlying specifications that institutions could adopt collectively.

On March 19, 2026, the World Gold Council and BCG released a white paper titled “Digital Gold: The Case for a Shared Infrastructure,” proposing an open “Gold-as-a-Service” platform. It would connect physical gold custody with digital issuance systems while standardizing inventory reconciliation, compliance, token issuance and redemption. The platform remains an industry proposal, with no construction cost or launch date announced.
