Apple Plans to Open Siri to Multiple AI Assistants

Apple announced at WWDC on June 10, 2024, that it would integrate OpenAI’s ChatGPT with Siri. The integration launched with iOS 18.2 on December 11 of that year, but ChatGPT remains the only external AI option. By opening Siri to more services, Apple could turn its base of more than 1 billion iPhone users into a distribution market for AI applications and subscriptions.

Recent reports say Apple is testing Siri “Extensions” for iOS 27, which is expected in 2026, with plans to add third-party AI assistants such as Gemini and Claude and end ChatGPT’s status as the sole integrated service. Apple has not disclosed the value of any partnerships, its App Store commission rate or an official launch date. The details still await official confirmation.
