Meta Platforms is pushing generative AI beyond chatbots with Muse, a personal agent designed to complete tasks through a virtual computer. For agentic coding workloads, it uses about 20% fewer tool calls and 25% fewer tokens than Muse Spark 1.2. Meta also released Muse Glimmer, an open-source model with roughly 30 billion parameters designed to run multi-step reasoning and automated tasks locally on personal computers.
Meta Releases Muse Glimmer for Local AI Agents
Meta Platforms built a large developer following by releasing the weights of its Llama models, but its decision to keep the flagship Muse Spark system closed raised questions about that strategy. Muse Glimmer marks a renewed push into open-weight AI, targeting agents that can execute code, call tools and complete multi-step workflows on local machines. Local deployment could reduce cloud costs while allowing companies and individuals to process sensitive information offline.
Meta released Muse Glimmer on Aug. 10, 2026, under the permissive Apache 2.0 license. The 30-billion-parameter model supports multimodal and multilingual reasoning, while 4-bit versions require less than 20GB of memory and can run on a single consumer GPU. Meta said Glimmer outperformed similarly sized Google Gemma 4 31B and Alibaba-backed Qwen3.6 27B models across selected coding, software-engineering and multi-step agent benchmarks, though the results remain company-reported.
Meta’s Muse Spark 1.2 Posts Gold-Level Reasoning, Strong Benchmark Gains
Meta Superintelligence Labs introduced the Muse Spark family in April as a multimodal reasoning system designed for complex scientific and software tasks. Muse Spark 1.2 extends that push as leading AI developers increasingly compete not only on headline accuracy, but also on the cost and speed of deploying models. Its tool-free Olympiad tests are significant because they seek to isolate the model’s underlying reasoning rather than gains from web search, coding or calculators.
Meta released Muse Spark 1.2 on Aug. 5 and on Aug. 7 said it achieved gold-medal-level results across several STEM Olympiads without external tools. Vals AI scored the model at 71.9 on the Vals Index, up 3.5 points from Muse Spark 1.1, placing it in the top five at a cost of $0.69 per test. It also led Finance Agent v2 with 59.4%, ahead of Gemini 3.6 Flash at 58.1%, while completing the Index run in 629.7 seconds.
Meta Launches Muse Code to Challenge OpenAI, Anthropic
Meta Platforms is expanding its generative-AI push into software development, taking aim at terminal-based coding tools led by Anthropic’s Claude Code and OpenAI Codex. Meta Superintelligence Labs introduced the Muse Spark model family on April 8 and opened a paid developer API on July 9. Muse Code marks a broader effort to turn Meta’s AI research into commercial tools for engineers handling complex, repository-scale work.
Meta AI released Muse Code in beta on Aug. 5, powered by the new Muse Spark 1.2 model and available on macOS and Linux. The agent can plan changes, write code, run tests and verify results, while persistent asynchronous background agents continue working across long sessions. Standard API pricing is $1.25 per million input tokens and $4.25 per million output tokens. Meta said one demonstration ran for up to 24 hours and made more than 1,000 tool calls.
Zuckerberg Bets Meta’s Future on Personal AI Agents
Meta Platforms is shifting its artificial-intelligence strategy beyond chatbots toward personal agents capable of acting continuously on a user’s behalf. Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg sees the technology helping people manage health, finances and software development while making advanced AI accessible to users without technical expertise. Meta’s global reach across Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and other services gives it a potential distribution base measured in billions.
Zuckerberg told Meta’s second-quarter earnings call on July 29, 2026, that the company plans a major push into personal AI agents, predicting billions of people could rely on them within five years. Meta reported quarterly revenue of $60.8 billion, up 28% from a year earlier, and set full-year capital spending at $130 billion to $145 billion as it builds the computing capacity required for advanced models and always-on agents.
Meta Launches Muse Image AI Image Generator
Social media giant Meta in July 2026 unveiled Muse Image, an AI image-generation model developed by its Superintelligence Labs, and integrated it into Instagram and WhatsApp. The model supports complex prompts and QR code generation. It was offered free of charge and marked a significant move by a technology giant into the AI imaging market.
However, the feature sparked a serious privacy backlash because the model used photos from public Instagram accounts by default without their owners’ consent. Meta urgently removed the free image-generation feature in mid-July 2026 to quell the criticism. It also delayed Muse Video, a video-generation service originally scheduled for release later.
