Insurers Push AI Upstream Into Care Decisions
Health insurers have traditionally deployed artificial intelligence after care is delivered, using it to review claims, detect fraud and automate administrative work. They are now moving the technology upstream into prior authorization and clinical decision support. The shift matters because earlier identification of costly conditions could steer patients toward appropriate diagnoses and treatment paths, potentially improving outcomes while reducing avoidable procedures, delayed care and medical spending.
Sun Life has adopted an AI-powered clinical navigation tool to identify members facing high-cost conditions, intervene earlier and guide them toward relevant diagnostic and treatment resources, according to the latest report. The program has produced a significant reduction in the medical-cost burden, the report said. However, it did not disclose a launch date, the number of members covered, a dollar amount saved or a percentage decline, leaving the scale and durability of the reported gains unquantified.
