Taiwan Stocks Hit Record 41,138 as Active ETFs Diverge
Taiwan's benchmark stock index has continued to set records, led by heavyweight stocks including Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), as capital remains highly concentrated in the index's core constituents. By contrast, the first active ETFs require asset managers to select stocks and adjust holdings. Their divergent performance reflects whether managers' allocations can keep pace with market leaders, providing investors with an important gauge of active management.
According to the latest report as of July 20, 2026, the index rose to an intraday record of 41,138 points, but nearly half of the listed active ETFs closed lower, with 00981A posting the steepest decline. Institutional investors said the fund held stocks with relatively high price-to-earnings ratios, while a shift in capital toward heavyweights such as TSMC put its constituent holdings under selling pressure. The report did not disclose the day's trading value.

The history behind this eventTaiwan Stocks Break 40,000 as Active ETFs Enter Growth Spurt After First Year
Active ETFs allow managers to adjust holdings as market conditions change, unlike passive funds that track an index. Taiwan's first such product, the Nomura Taiwan Smart Select Active ETF, ticker 00980A, was listed on May 5, 2025. Launched amid an AI investment boom and the strength of Taiwan's semiconductor supply chain, it has become a new vehicle for investors seeking exposure to the equity market rally.
As 00980A marked its first anniversary, Taiwan stocks posted their largest-ever one-day gain and broke through 40,000, reaching an intraday high of 40,705. Assets in Taiwan's active ETFs also surpassed NT$450 billion. KGI Securities said the market would develop along four main tracks: broader product variety, greater strategy differentiation, asset growth and wider investor adoption.
