FTC Says U.S. Consumer Fraud Losses Rose to $15.9 Billion
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission collects consumer fraud reports and enforces related safeguards. Reported U.S. losses have risen for six consecutive years since 2020, increasing by nearly 430% in total. The trend shows that fraud has become a major risk to household financial security and regulatory policy.
FTC officials recently told Congress that consumers filed about 3 million fraud reports in 2025, with total losses reaching $15.9 billion. That was up 32.5% from $12 billion in 2024. The increase was driven primarily by a rise in high-value cases involving losses of more than $100,000 each and could prompt Congress to strengthen consumer protections.
