Mistral Raises Record €3 Billion in Samsung-Led Funding

Paris-based Mistral AI is extending its sovereign-AI strategy into the Middle East, where governments want greater local control over models, data and computing capacity. HUMAIN, launched on May 12, 2025 by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, operates across data centers, cloud services and advanced AI models. The partnership matters because it supports Riyadh’s push to build a domestic AI industry while reducing concentrated reliance on European and U.S. infrastructure.

Mistral AI and HUMAIN announced the partnership on Aug. 24, 2026, valuing the collaboration at hundreds of millions of euros without disclosing an exact figure or delivery timetable. Their work will span AI infrastructure, advanced-model development and regional deployment, initially targeting cybersecurity and voice applications alongside frontier models optimized for Arabic. Mistral will also explore using HUMAIN’s Saudi data-center capacity for local computing needs, while the companies plan a joint go-to-market strategy for regulated industries in the kingdom.

Founded in Paris in 2023, Mistral has emerged as one of Europe’s most prominent artificial intelligence startups, developing large language models as a regional alternative to US-led platforms such as OpenAI. Microsoft’s investment and partnership with the company, announced in February 2024, raised Mistral’s international profile and underscored Europe’s drive to build greater technological sovereignty in generative AI.

Samsung is in talks to invest as much as €1 billion in Mistral in a transaction that could value the French AI company at about €20 billion, according to recent reports. Discussions remain ongoing and the terms could still change. A deal would give Mistral additional capital to expand model development and computing capacity, while helping Samsung deepen its position in the global AI ecosystem beyond partnerships dominated by US technology groups.

Founded in 2023, Mistral AI is seen as one of Europe's leading challengers to OpenAI. Its large language model, Mistral Large, relies on high-performance computing chips. As demand for model training grows, securing supplies of key components such as NVIDIA GPUs and Samsung Electronics' high-bandwidth memory is critical to expanding its AI infrastructure and reducing supply-chain risks.

Chief Executive Arthur Mensch recently visited Samsung Electronics in South Korea to discuss the AI chip supply chain and potential cooperation on HBM and AI memory, seeking more stable semiconductor resources for Mistral Large. Mensch also said developing chips in-house was imperative, though Mistral still relies on NVIDIA for now. Reports did not disclose the exact date of the visit, procurement volumes or the value of any potential partnership.

Mistral AI, a French generative AI company founded in 2023, is building its own computing infrastructure to strengthen European AI sovereignty. Control over data centers and GPU capacity could help governments and businesses reduce their reliance on large U.S. cloud providers while gaining greater autonomy over model training, inference and sensitive-data processing.

Mistral AI said on March 30, 2026, that it had completed its first debt financing, raising $830 million for a data center in Bruyères-le-Châtel near Paris. The funding will finance the purchase of 13,800 NVIDIA GB300 GPUs and increase the facility’s power capacity to 44 MW. The company aims to secure 200 MW of computing capacity in Europe by the end of 2027.
