IBM Unveils First Dual-Architecture Arm and Mainframe Chip

IBM’s mainframe business has long relied on the proprietary IBM Z instruction set to deliver the reliability and backward compatibility demanded by banks, governments and other large enterprises. That specialization has also limited direct access to the vast Arm software and artificial-intelligence ecosystem. A processor supporting both architectures could reduce application-porting costs and broaden IBM’s reach across hybrid-cloud, edge-computing and enterprise AI workloads.

IBM unveiled its first processor capable of natively running both Arm and IBM Z applications at the Hot Chips conference. The chip is built on a 2-nanometer process and includes an integrated accelerator for AI inference, allowing mainframe and Arm workloads to operate on the same hardware platform. IBM has not disclosed a production timetable, pricing, detailed performance benchmarks or customer availability for the processor.
