Anthropic Launches Claude Cowork Desktop AI Agent

Artificial intelligence company Anthropic is working to make generative AI more practical. Its autonomous agent service can carry out multistep tasks across files and applications, marking a milestone in improving business productivity. The service turns AI from a one-way conversational tool into a virtual assistant that can operate in the background and handle complex workflows, opening new possibilities for business automation.

Anthropic announced web and mobile app versions of Claude Cowork on July 16, 2026. The service is initially rolling out to users of its top-tier Max plans, priced at $100 and $200 a month. It supports multistep business tasks across platforms, allowing users to submit work to the cloud and then go offline while the workflow runs entirely in the background.

Anthropic’s Claude Cowork is designed to let AI agents carry out multi-step tasks on users’ behalf, ranging from organizing information to handling enterprise workflows. Expanding beyond its original environment to the web and mobile devices could embed the AI virtual coworker more deeply in daily operations and cross-device collaboration, marking an important step in enterprise adoption of generative AI.

Anthropic has announced that Claude Cowork will expand to the web and mobile, with support for cross-platform operation and continuous cloud-based background processing. Early data show that 33.4% of users already employ the tool for business-process operations. However, available reports do not specify an exact release date, subscription price or related investment amount, and the rollout timetable and pricing plans have yet to be announced.

Anthropic positions Claude Cowork as a desktop AI workplace agent that helps companies and professionals integrate AI into their daily workflows. Expanding its usage allowance could lower barriers to experimentation and help users develop new habits. The move also reflects Anthropic’s accelerating effort to challenge Microsoft Copilot and Google Gemini.

Anthropic said it would double Claude Cowork’s usage allowance in each five-hour period for one month beginning June 5, 2026. The limited-time measure focuses on the desktop service, giving users more time and more workplace scenarios in which to test the AI agent. Anthropic hopes the initiative will further increase adoption among businesses and professionals.

Anthropic’s Claude Cowork is a desktop agent workspace for knowledge workers, while its existing Artifacts have largely been static content generated during conversations. Live Artifacts turns charts and trackers into persistent, interactive HTML dashboards connected to enterprise apps and local files, allowing AI to move beyond one-off answers and play a greater role in daily monitoring and decision-making.

Anthropic launched Live Artifacts in Claude Cowork on April 20, 2026. Each time a dashboard is opened, it retrieves the latest data from authorized apps and local files, preserves versions and can also be refreshed manually. The feature is available only on Claude Desktop and is offered under four paid plans: Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise.

Anthropic launched Claude Code in February 2025, allowing developers to use natural language in the terminal to read and write code, run tests and handle tasks spanning multiple files. As AI agents increasingly work on multiple tasks in parallel, centralized progress tracking and fewer terminal switches and code conflicts have become more important. The desktop app has consequently evolved into an integrated development workstation.

Anthropic launched a redesigned Claude Code desktop app on April 14, 2026, adding a multi-session sidebar and drag-and-drop layouts. It integrates a terminal, file editing, diff views and live previews, and offers three display modes. Claude Cowork is Anthropic’s agentic work platform for knowledge workers. With authorization, it can read and write files, operate existing applications and complete multistep tasks. The platform positions Claude as an orchestration layer connecting data and software, making traditional software providers partners rather than simply replacing them with AI.

On February 24, 2026, Anthropic added connectors for Google Drive, FactSet and MSCI, launched five financial plugins, and enabled cross-application workflows spanning Excel and PowerPoint. On April 9, it opened Cowork to all paid plans and added role-based permissions, group spending caps, OpenTelemetry and usage analytics to the enterprise edition. Financial terms of the partnerships were not disclosed.
