Google, Taiwan’s NHIA Advance AI Healthcare With Gemini Assistant and Diabetes Screening

Taiwan’s National Health Insurance Administration (NHIA), Google Cloud and Google Health launched the AI-on-DM partnership on June 13, 2024, with Taipei Medical University and the National Health Research Institutes developing the model. The project targets about 3.2 million diabetes patients, whose care accounts for 15% of total National Health Insurance spending. Early identification of complication risks is therefore critical to controlling healthcare costs and directing patients to primary care.

On March 4, 2026, the NHIA said the model had been integrated into its family medicine platform and would initially be validated at 40 clinics. It also plans to launch a Gemini-powered personalized health education assistant in the My Health Bank app by the end of March. The time required to assess one case fell from 20 minutes to 25 seconds, while screening 20,000 people was cut from three weeks of work by 40 experts to 1 hour and 24 minutes. Google.org separately donated $1 million to expand the program to 300 sites in rural and underserved areas.
