Customers Bank Partners With OpenAI to Bring AI Into Commercial Banking
Customers Bank, the U.S. regional bank owned by Customers Bancorp, has nearly $26 billion in assets. The relationship began with the adoption of ChatGPT Enterprise in 2023. The latest initiative will move AI beyond an employee tool and into core lending, deposit and payment processes, affecting underwriting efficiency, data governance and regulatory transparency. It also reflects how regional banks are using AI to narrow the technology gap with larger rivals.
Customers Bank announced a multiyear strategic partnership with OpenAI on April 27, 2026. Financial terms were not disclosed. OpenAI technical teams will embed with the bank to develop customized AI agents based on its workflows and data. The first systems are expected to be completed within 6 to 12 months, with the goal of cutting commercial loan closing times from 30–45 days to about 7 days. The partnership will also enhance cubiX, the bank's payments platform that processes about $2 trillion in transactions annually.
