AI Verification Burden Erodes Workplace Productivity, Survey Finds

Companies have embraced generative AI to accelerate writing, research and administrative work, betting that automation will free employees for higher-value tasks. But unreliable or uneven output can impose a “verification tax”: workers must check sources, correct errors and rewrite weak material while retaining responsibility for the final product. That hidden review burden is increasingly complicating corporate claims that AI delivers straightforward productivity gains.

A newly released consultancy survey found that 65% of white-collar knowledge workers miss the workplace before AI became widespread, with Gen Z reporting the strongest nostalgia among age groups. The research said time spent reviewing, debugging and repairing poor AI-generated work can outweigh the time the tools initially save. The findings suggest companies may need to measure net productivity after human oversight costs, rather than counting only the speed of generating a first draft.
