Apple Reportedly Distilling Gemini Into On-Device Siri Model

Apple is reportedly working with Google to gain deep access to Gemini as part of an effort to overhaul Siri, using model distillation to train a smaller model that can run locally on iPhones. The architecture is designed to preserve low latency and privacy, while allowing Apple to strengthen its AI assistant with external technology before its own large models are ready.

Google has confirmed its partnership with Apple, according to the latest reports, with Gemini set to support the next generation of Siri. Apple is reportedly paying about $1 billion a year. The features are expected to be included in iOS 27, due to be unveiled in 2026. Apple is also continuing to develop its own model that does not depend on Gemini, preserving the option to replace the external technology in the future.
