Automakers Turn to In-Car AI for New Digital Revenue
Automakers including Ford and General Motors are integrating artificial-intelligence assistants with vehicle data as they seek revenue beyond the initial car sale. The technology could help manufacturers maintain direct relationships with owners and build recurring digital-service businesses after delivery, turning connected vehicles into platforms for personalized information and paid features over a car’s lifetime.
Ford has already made an AI assistant available to millions of vehicle owners, allowing them to ask questions about their cars and access vehicle-status information. The company plans to introduce a more deeply integrated in-vehicle version in 2027, a step that would give the assistant closer access to onboard systems and data as automakers test new after-sales revenue streams.

The history behind this eventFord Launches AI Assistant for Real-Time Vehicle Checks
Ford Motor Co. is moving generative AI beyond generic questions by tying an assistant to data from a customer’s specific vehicle. The approach lets owners ask about vehicle health, maintenance and specifications in plain language instead of searching an owner’s manual or navigating app menus. Ford is launching the service through the Ford and Lincoln mobile apps, allowing existing customers to gain the feature without purchasing a new vehicle.
Ford unveiled the initiative at CES on Jan. 7, 2026, and began rolling out the chatbot in early August. The assistant can check fuel levels and tire pressure while answering vehicle-specific questions about payload, towing capacity and service needs. Ford said the app-first rollout could reach as many as 8 million customers, with native integration in Ford and Lincoln vehicles planned for 2027. The automaker has not announced a separate price.
