Meta Drops AI Token Metric, Shifts Focus to Business Impact
Meta had used AI token consumption to track how extensively engineers adopted generative AI, part of a broader push among technology companies to embed the tools in software development. But usage volume does not necessarily translate into productivity, code quality or commercial results. Tying performance reviews to token counts can also encourage employees to maximize a visible activity metric instead of focusing on useful output and measurable business impact.
Meta said in an internal memo that it is dropping AI token usage as a performance metric for engineers and will instead assess their output and impact. The company also said AI agents now assist with 93% of code changes internally, indicating that adoption has become widespread across its development workflow. Meta’s message was that using AI is not an end in itself, shifting management’s focus from tool consumption to the results employees produce with it.

The history behind this event‘Tokenmaxxing’ Sweeps Silicon Valley as Meta Staff Compare AI Token Usage Internally
Engineering teams across Silicon Valley have recently embraced “tokenmaxxing,” treating generative AI token consumption as a gauge of tool adoption and productivity gains. At Meta, an internal leaderboard called “Claudeonomics” allowed about 85,000 employees to compare their use of Claude and other AI tools, fueling debate over whether the metric distorts performance assessments.
A recently leaked Meta leaderboard showed employees used more than 60 trillion tokens in total over 30 days. Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg was also reported to have used Claude to help write code. The leaderboard was quickly taken down after internal data leaked, though reports did not specify the exact dates it went live or was removed. Supporters view it as a measure of AI adoption, while critics worry that competition for higher rankings wastes resources.
