AI Data Centers Turn to Recycled Water as Cooling Infrastructure Lags
The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence computing is increasing the amount of water needed to cool dense concentrations of servers. Data-center operators are turning to treated wastewater to reduce demand on municipal drinking-water supplies, but access depends on nearby treatment capacity, dedicated pipelines and reliable delivery — infrastructure that often develops more slowly than computing facilities.
A recent report said 43% of the cooling water used by AI data centers comes from treated sewage, including household toilet wastewater. The shift can ease pressure on freshwater systems, yet its scale is constrained by the output of nearby wastewater plants and the time required to build treatment and distribution links. Those bottlenecks risk limiting water-reuse plans as new data centers come online.

Liquid Death recently highlighted the issue with a humorous advertisement proposing that human urine be used to cool servers. Water-treatment specialists said pumping urine directly through cooling systems is not a practical solution, but treated municipal wastewater is already a mature alternative. Reclaimed water that meets appropriate quality standards can replace drinking water in cooling operations, reducing the strain that continued AI infrastructure growth places on local water supplies.
