Ethereum Foundation Makes ‘Hardness’ a 2026 Priority to Bolster L1 Censorship Resistance and Privacy
The Ethereum Foundation has long advanced Ethereum protocol research and coordinated its ecosystem. As the network scales and its user experience improves, transaction censorship, privacy leaks and threats from quantum computing are drawing greater attention. “Hardness” has therefore become a key defense for preserving L1 decentralization, neutrality, security and permissionless participation.
In its 2026 protocol update plan, the Ethereum Foundation formally designated “Hardness” as its third core priority, covering L1 censorship resistance, privacy protection and post-quantum security, with dedicated researchers assigned to the work. The foundation has not disclosed funding, a complete timeline or launch dates for the individual upgrades.
