Meta Smart Glasses Reportedly Feature On-Device AI Facial Recognition, Tests Identify Specific People

The smart glasses developed by Meta and Ray-Ban already feature a camera, voice assistant and Meta AI. Adding facial recognition could transform them from recording tools into wearable devices capable of identifying people in real time. Meta previously explored a project called NameTag, and such technology has renewed privacy concerns because of the risks of collecting biometric data without consent, tracking people and misusing data.

A security researcher who reverse-engineered the Meta smart-glasses app found that it already integrates three on-device AI models for face detection, facial alignment and feature extraction. The system can compare feature vectors against a local biometric database. Tests showed that it could identify specific people and trigger notifications. As of July 20, 2026, Meta had neither formally announced nor publicly enabled the feature.
