Hyperliquid Treasury Posts $1.1 Billion Gain as Strategy’s Bitcoin Holdings Show $12.8 Billion Paper Loss

1 reports · First detected 2026-06-06 · Last active 2026-06-06

Sharp cryptocurrency-market swings in the first half of 2026 have renewed scrutiny of the risks companies face when holding tokens or Bitcoin as treasury assets. Hyperliquid supports the value of its assets through platform revenue and a HYPE token buyback mechanism, contrasting with MicroStrategy, now known as Strategy, and its model of simply accumulating Bitcoin. The divergence also reflects the market’s greater emphasis on sustainable cash flow.

As of the first half of 2026, the HYPE position held by the Hyperliquid treasury company remained about $1.1 billion in profit on paper, making it a standout among comparable companies. Strategy’s Bitcoin holdings, meanwhile, showed about $12.8 billion in unrealized losses. The performance gap of more than $13.9 billion highlights the importance of buyback demand and operating revenue in helping treasury assets withstand market declines.

The Backstory

The history behind this event
Hyperion’s Quarterly Profit Triples as HYPE Holdings Surge2026-08-13 · 1 reports · similarity 0.84

Hyperion, the treasury entity tied to the Hyperliquid ecosystem, holds a significant position in HYPE, the network’s native token. That strategy makes its financial results highly sensitive to crypto-market swings: rising token prices can generate substantial valuation gains and expand its balance sheet, while a reversal could quickly erode reported earnings. The latest results underscore both the appeal and volatility of digital-asset treasury models.

Hyperion’s profit in the second quarter rose to three times its first-quarter level, driven mainly by appreciation in its HYPE holdings. The position increased in value from $71 million at the end of the first quarter to $133 million during the second quarter, a gain of $62 million, or about 87%. The sharp rise in the token portfolio was the principal factor behind the quarter-on-quarter profit surge.

Hyperliquid Whale Holds HYPE Short Despite $22 Million Loss2026-05-21 · 2 reports · similarity 0.82

Hyperliquid is a decentralized trading platform focused on perpetual futures, and HYPE is its native token. HYPE rose as much as 134% in 2026, while a US spot HYPE ETF launched on May 12 attracted $58.73 million. The price rally forced short sellers to cover, putting the highly leveraged whale in focus as traders watched for a short squeeze and broader market risks.

On May 21, the whale used 5x leverage to short 1.8 million HYPE, building a position worth $102.98 million. As the token rose to $57.30, the position’s unrealized loss reached $22.18 million. On June 2, loracle.hl ultimately closed the short, realizing a $46.46 million loss and more than $54,000 in funding fees, before reversing course with a $5.98 million long position at 2x leverage.
