OpenAI Takes Codex Mobile as GitHub Previews Copilot App

OpenAI initially positioned Codex as a software development agent but is now expanding it into a general-purpose knowledge-work platform for research, data analysis, reports and presentations. The company said on June 2, 2026, that Codex had more than 5 million weekly active users, an increase of more than sixfold since the desktop app launched in February. Non-engineers accounted for about 20% of users, and their ranks were growing more than three times as fast as those of developers.

OpenAI launched six plugins spanning 62 apps and 110 skills on June 2, 2026, and previewed Sites. On April 22, it unveiled a WebSocket mode for the Responses API that made agent workflows 40% faster. On April 2, it cut the annual ChatGPT Business price from $25 to $20 per seat. Eligible teams adding Codex seats could receive $100 in credits, capped at $500.

OpenAI’s simultaneous expansion of ChatGPT, Codex and Atlas over the past year has spread its product, computing and research resources across multiple fronts. Combining the three marks a shift toward a unified experience. The new extension allows Codex to work with real accounts and workflows spanning multiple tabs, including services such as Gmail and Salesforce. This moves AI agents beyond offering advice to performing tasks, while increasing the risks of account-data leaks and unintended actions.

As of July 20, 2026, OpenAI had launched the Codex Chrome extension. Once installed, it can be invoked with “@Chrome” in Work mode or Codex to process cross-page tasks within a tab group in the background. Installation may require eight categories of permissions, including access to read and change data on all websites and view browsing history. However, confirmation is still required by default for each new domain, and users can configure allowlists and blocklists.

OpenAI Codex is an AI coding agent that can read and write files, run commands, test code and create commits in an isolated environment, turning natural-language requests into verifiable development workflows. Access is priced through ChatGPT subscriptions rather than as a one-time software purchase.

As of July 2026, OpenAI had also launched a Codex Chrome extension that can test web apps directly, capture context across tabs and allow multiple agents to work on tasks in parallel. Codex is available through plans including ChatGPT Plus at $20 a month, Pro at $200 a month and Business. Actual usage limits and available models vary by plan.

OpenAI has added a “pets” feature to the Codex desktop app, using floating animated characters to show the working status of AI agents. Developers can track task progress without repeatedly switching windows. The design integrates status monitoring into the interface and is intended to improve visibility and interaction in AI-assisted development, rather than facilitate financial transactions.

As of July 20, 2026, Codex pets can reflect an AI agent’s activity in real time through three status indicators and hatch personalized characters based on programming languages the user has recently written, including Rust and Python. OpenAI has not announced separate pricing, a complete list of supported languages or dates for a phased rollout.

OpenAI launched the Codex macOS app on Feb. 2, 2026, initially focusing on parallel management of multiple coding agents, isolated worktrees and background tasks. A major update on April 16 added Computer Use, a built-in browser, gpt-image-1.5 image generation and a memory preview, expanding Codex from a coding tool into a development agent that can operate across applications. The latest expansion began with the Chronicle research preview on April 20, which uses on-device screenshots to create editable memories. OpenAI then open-sourced the Symphony orchestration specification on April 27, after internally increasing pull-request submissions sixfold. On May 14, it enabled users to remotely resume Mac tasks from their phones. On May 21, it added Appshots, continued operation after the Mac is locked and improved browser annotations. The initial rollout also included more than 90 plugins, though some reports put the total at 111.

OpenAI and Anthropic are competing for the AI software development tools market, with Codex going head-to-head with Claude Code. OpenAI President Greg Brockman has instructed engineering teams to make AI agents central to their daily development work. The aim is to shorten coding, testing and deployment cycles, deepen the model’s adoption in enterprise software workflows and strengthen the ChatGPT ecosystem.

OpenAI recently began a six-week product sprint that includes rapid releases of the Codex desktop app, GPT-5.4 and security-agent features. It also plans to combine ChatGPT, Codex and the Atlas browser into a desktop “super app.” The company has not disclosed the investment involved or exact release dates. The central goal of the update push is to counter Anthropic’s Claude Code.
