OpenAI to Combine ChatGPT, Codex and Atlas Into a Single Super App
OpenAI’s simultaneous expansion of ChatGPT, Codex and Atlas over the past year has spread its product, computing and research resources across multiple fronts. Combining the three marks a shift toward a unified experience. It could also determine whether the company can bring chat, software development and web interaction together in an AI agent platform capable of executing tasks ahead of a potential IPO.
As of July 19, 2026, OpenAI’s applications chief executive Fidji Simo was leading the integration, with plans to bring ChatGPT, Codex and Atlas into a single desktop application and give Codex a more central role. The company has not announced a formal launch date, phased rollout schedule or investment amount.

Its expansion to the ChatGPT mobile app lets developers monitor work while away from their computers. GitHub’s Copilot App, meanwhile, strengthens parallel management of multiple agents and workflows, moving agentic development beyond the editor into a standalone desktop environment.
In July 2026, OpenAI began allowing users to connect remotely through the ChatGPT mobile app to Codex running on a Mac. Users can track progress, review output, approve actions and launch new tasks. During the same period, GitHub released a technical preview of the GitHub Copilot App, a desktop interface for centrally managing multiple workflows and agents. Neither company disclosed pricing or a date for full general availability.
